THE SVETLANA IN ME

There are actors of all cultures and nationalities, and when exercising their craft in another culture, that task becomes a challenging experience. The hardest part of this challenge might be realizing and accepting one's personal and cultural differences. For some actors this can result in years of self-struggle, and attempts to either dismiss their culture completely, or fully embrace their own culture and close the doors to any other ways of thinking. Through a personal experience of a Turkish actress in the United States, this book documents a journey from seeing foreignness as a handicap, to the realization that being a foreign actor can have many rewards. A good source for any actor performing for an audience who shares a different cultural background than him/her. Also a beneficial study for every other theatre artist, as the world is getting smaller and our neighborhoods more diverse. Plus, we never know where we might be working next!

Shaman: The Cole Trilogy, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Dig...

Shaman is the prize-winning second volume of Noah Gordon's celebrated Cole trilogy. It is as great a listening experience as The Physician. A New York Times Notable Book. Dr. Robert Judson Cole travels from his ravaged Scotland homeland, through the operating rooms of Boston, to the cabins of frontier Illinois. In the wilderness he befriends the starving remnants of the Sauk tribe, who have fled their reservation. In the process, he absorbs their culture and learns native remedies that enrich the classical medical education he received at Edinburgh University. He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness. The details of how their deaf son manages to become a physician also, despite his handicap, and the story of how the Cole family is sucked into the bloody vortex of the Civil War and survives, makes an exceptional listening experience. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ben Owen. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/031081/bk_adbl_031081_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Sandi Lansky Lombardo grew up the only daughter of mob boss Meyer Lansky. Raised in upper-class Jewish splendor, first at the Majestic Hotel and then at the Beresford, at finishing schools and fancy stables, Sandi was the wild child of the late 40's, the 50's, and the early 60's. She was the Paris Hilton of her day, partying till dawn at El Morocco and the Stork Club, dating the biggest celebrities of the era. Her life was not without heartbreak and tragedy, including the insanity of her mother, and the crippling handicap of her baby brother - not to mention his drug addiction. Sandi was privy to her father's secrets as well as his unexpected tenderness. She always stuck closely to the strict code of omerta. In Daughter of the King , Sandi teams up with Nick Pileggi (author of the seminal Wise Guy , perhaps the best-selling mob book ever) and multiple time New York Times Bestselling writer Bill Stadiem. Nick has made a career in books and films chronicling the mob, and Bill has emerged as a master of recreating the glamour and romance of the golden era of American culture with bestsellers like Mr. S and George Hamilton's Don't Mind if I Do .

Finding Zoe: A Deaf Woman's Story of Identity, ...
37,90 CHF *

Four-month old Zoe was gradually losing her hearing. Her adoptive parents loved her--yet agonized-- feeling they couldn't handle raising a deaf child. Would Zoe go back into the welfare system and spend her childhood hoping to find parents willing to adopt her? Or would Zoe be the long-sought answer to a mother's prayers? Brandi Rarus was just 6 when spinal meningitis took away her hearing. Because she spoke well and easily adjusted to lip reading, she was mainstreamed at school and socialized primarily in the hearing community. Brandi was a popular and happy teen, but communication--and being fully part of every conversation--was an ongoing struggle. In college, Brandi embraced Deaf Culture along with the joys of complete and effortless communication with her peers. For the first time, being deaf wasn't a handicap; it was a passport to a new and exciting world. Brandi went on to become Miss Deaf America in 1988 and served as a spokesperson for her community. It was during her tenure as Miss Deaf America that Brandi met Tim, a leader of the Gallaudet uprising in support of selecting the school's first deaf president. The two went on to marry and had three hearing boys--the first non-deaf children born in Tim's family in 125 years. Brandi was incredibly grateful to have her happy and healthy family, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing from her life. She had always dreamed she would have a daughter. Little did she know that just across the state line, Zoe was waiting for her. Set against the backdrop of Deaf America, Finding Zoe is an uplifting story of hope, adoption, and everyday miracles.
